Sandy Kitchen Granite Countertops
All this kitchen remodeling needed to come back to life was new granite countertops! At least that's what the homeowners thought four years ago. Intermountain Stone fabricated and installed the beautiful Violetta granite in 2 pieces, including the sink area and peninsula bartop. A new Swanstone undermount double sink, a Moen PureTouch water filter pullout spray faucet, and stainless steel appliance fronts had this Sandy family feeling proud!

Then, time came for change, again. Sometimes, a complete kitchen remodeling can be accomplished with an extensive update. The owners wanted to use the existing cabinets, which I usually don't recommend. And by the way, could the granite countertops be saved? That's the remodel challenge I faced. 20 year old original mid-range contractor cabinets like these usually show too much wear, but these weren't too bad, so ahead we charged. This same kitchen is now completely remodeled using most of the existing cabinets (with some significant changes and additions to the upper/wall cabinets) and same granite countertop. I did have to carefully remove and replace the granite desk top on the refrigerator wall, but I was able to slide a new cabinet in under the peninsula granite top to replace the obsolete trash compactor. The cabinet boxes were stripped of their original yellowed oak sealer and spray painted with an opaque cream stain on site. Cabinet doors and drawers were taken back to the shop for treatment. The peninsula upper cabinets were removed and space replaced by the glass wall display cabinet to the right. Oak crown molding was added. The china hutch and desk were shifted to make room for a built-in refrigerator cabinet. A 1970's style dropped ceiling flourescent light trough was at the height of the upper cabinet tops. We removed the drop and added 16 recessed lights in the new kitchen ceiling, and another 10 recessed lights in the adjoining family room area. All electrical improvements were installed by Cornerstones Electrical.

This kitchen remodeling focused on attention to detail. A new microwave cabinet and fan vent surround were added above (the vent exhausts to the outside wall through the ceiling floor joists), and the corner appliance garage cabinet had to be cut down in height. Added oak cabinets were made by Cabinet World, and installed by the Contractor. The freestanding electric range was replaced with a new Kitchen Aid gas cooktop and wall oven, requiring some new cabinet fillers. Also, Intermountain Stone made Violetta granite fillers for the drop-in cooktop. New added oak crown molding makes all the difference! Rope lights were installed behind the crown, and make for dramatic after dark lighting. And undercabinet lighting makes the granite countertops shine. Kitchen Aid microwave. All appliances by Sure Appliances.

All these cabinets were shifted to the right about 6" to allow for a 42" wide Kitchen Aid built in refrigerator, with a capacity of 27 cuft. A new refrigerator surround goes to the ceiling to balance the adjoining microwave vent surround. Refrigerator panels from Cabinet World were added. (The dishwasher also has a panel.) Halogen lights and glass shelves were added to the china cabinet interior. The desk chair space was filled in by a cabinet with tray dividers. Travertine 18x18 tiles were installed in the kitchen and extend out to the front entry. Price range for a similar project: $40,000 - $60,000.
